Turin Brakes joined Dermot O’Leary last weekend to talk Optimist tour and the years that passed since the release of that record. It was quite a pleasant show. The guys (Olly, Gale, Rob and Ed) played a rendition of Underdog (Save Me) that closely resembled the album version. More stripped down, more intimate. They will play it like this during the tour as well. The guys also covered Wicked Game in a similar fashion. You can listen to the songs here and download the whole thing.

So, here’s a little early Christmas present… Maurice (thanks dude!) has made MP3 versions of the Ogilvy live stream which you can now listen to on your MP3 player or phone or dance to without having to face Olly’s intense judgemental stares while doing your best moves on Wicked Game or Underdog.

So yesterday Turin Brakes played the Canterbury Festival. It was a very nice evening in a very nice big hall with great acoustics. The band played a set full of classics with some unexpected twists and turns… Expect a proper review soon, for now here’s a recording of Emergency 72, made last night with my recording thing. I hope you dig it. Olly is on a bit of a roll here, with the extremely extended intro. And then they have to change into the proper song as well…

Olly joined BBC 6Music show Jon Holmes for the light-hearted quiz Ken Brucemaster (instead of BBC Radio 2 Ken Bruce’s Popmaster, a quiz Olly has been a guest on as well). Olly talks about the new album as well as his mother in law and her clothes so let’s hope for him this radio segment hasn’t resulted in a family crisis… The whole thing ends with an airing of Sea Change, which is out on the 22nd.

Remember, remember the first week of September? That first week, Olly and Gale did a lot of promotion for the Bottled At Source compilation. Though some interviews are actually similar, some of them feature very interesting insights in the early days. This is one of those very nice interviews, going into 9/11, the making of The Optimist LP, the current compilation and working with Take That. Since there are no session tracks (just album tracks from the compilation), it’s all in one big MP3 file. In total, the interview lasts 19 minutes.

So in the first of what is to become many “Session Sundays”, here’s the first of many Bottled At Source promoting radio sessions. The interviews will be quite similar (lots of talking about their childhood and past), spiced with hints of the future. The songs are quite similar as well, there’s quite a lot of Painkiller and Underdog in all the sessions I will post. You will also find several versions of Never Stops appearing online over the coming weeks. However, this first one is also one of the better ones in my opinion: the interview is laidback and relaxed and the songs are well performed. You can choose to download the whole thing (11 MP3 files with interview and acoustic songs) or just the music. Make your pick and enjoy.

Earlier today, Turin Brakes recorded an interview and session for Dermot O’leary. While most acts just played one track, Olly, Gale and Ed got the chance to play two (The Sea Change and ‘old friend’ Fishing For A Dream).

In the interview the band talked about the upcoming Best Of, a new album (that is currently being mixed) and playing at the festival. Gale is about to become a father: Leia Grace will get a baby brother/sister soon, and Ed’s woman is also expecting a child any day now. In the beginning of the interview there appear to be some sound problems, but this is resolved after a minute.

On to the download then. I’ve decided to offer the songs as separate download MP3s. If you want the full thing (5 MP3s featuring the 10 minute interview and the two songs), you can download the full RAR-archive. You need to ‘unrar’ this file, by downloading a free Trial version of Winrar (or a different archive program). The files are hosted on Rapidshare. Click the Free button (if you don’t have an account) and wait for the countdown to finish. Then click on Download.

New downloads and other site works

I’ve updated the site over the past few days. First of all, the press archive in the writings section is now properly working, I will fix the shared stories section later. I’ve added a 2005 interview with Kent Online. Check it out. Also, I’ve fixed all the links in the bootlegs area. On top of that, I’ve added a 6music session for George Lamb featuring Above The Clouds and Something In My Eye. I never got round to updating this, but it’s finally there now, 18 months after the original broadcast. So check out the download here.

People may notice that the header is not clickable when you want to go to the Dutch section, shop, rss-feed and contact page, but you can reach those places via other ways. I had to change this when upgrading the layout recently. Those buttons will disappear and I’ve yet to find a new nice place for them. I’ll think of something.

If anyone encounters any problems, let me know. I’m writing a new feature for the site that will be up by the end of the week in the State Of Things. I can’t tell you what it is, but I like it.

In these quiet times, I thought I’d upload some more old bootlegs. Providing I have the time, I’ll try to do this at least once per two weeks. The links will of course appear here as well as in the bootleg section.

Back in 2001, Turin Brakes were guests on a French TV music show, called Le Réservoir. They played songs from The Optimist LP: Future Boy, The Door and Emergency 72.

The other guest on the show was Suzanne Vega. Olly Knights joined Suzanne for an exclusive duet version of Vega’s hit Luka. Turin Brakes have never performed this song elsewhere, so it’s quite an exclusive.

Noone has found a way to download those videos TB recorded at Hydro Connect for BBC Scotland, but Skyline Number Nine found a way to record the songs and upload them to Mediafire.
