New TurinBrakes.com, features podcast

There’s a new and fresh turinbrakes.com up and running. If it doesn’t show, you might want to refresh the page.

Besides a brand new look, the website features news, a discography, a photo and video gallery and a new community page where people can upload photos and videos. Also new is the podcast, featuring Olly and Gale talking for almost 30 minutes on things they like (including music, lunch and the instruments in their studio). They also play a cover of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (originally by Neill Young). Let’s hope we’ll see more of these as time goes by (perhaps on the road as well “Live from Scotland/Germany/The Netherlands/Italy”?).

So if you want to see the band live next month, in whatever venue, you really should buy tickets now as they appear to be going fast.

Download & Listen Again: Olly on BBC6 Music Jon Holmes

Olly joined BBC 6Music show Jon Holmes for the light-hearted quiz Ken Brucemaster (instead of BBC Radio 2 Ken Bruce’s Popmaster, a quiz Olly has been a guest on as well). Olly talks about the new album as well as his mother in law and her clothes so let’s hope for him this radio segment hasn’t resulted in a family crisis… The whole thing ends with an airing of Sea Change, which is out on the 22nd.

Listen again here (it starts after one hour and a couple of minutes) or download the Turin Brakes related bit from Rapidshare (click on free and if a countdown starts wait for it to finish).

Turin Brakes thank Take That for album

If you’re a frequent reader of this website, you may already know Turin Brakes wrote Here for Take That. BBC 6Music has now run a news story on the matter:

“We took that money that we made off that song and reinvested it in our studio and this album,” revealed Olly. “So technically, you know, without Take That…I don’t know if we’d have a Turin Brakes album.”

“I’m not going to say we made a huge amount but we made enough money to cover a few debts that we’d built up over a couple of years of not being signed. We had to find some money from somewhere. Neither me or Gale have made enough money to sit back and relax by any stretch, so we have to find money. It is about that.”

Full story here.

Also, Olly will be on Jon Holmes show for the Ken Brucemaster Quiz after 5 pm (UK time) today.

Sea Change in (stunning) Stop Motion

The first of three Sea Change videos has been posted on MUZU.tv. It’s a stop motion (frame by frame) video of miniature soldiers fighting in what presumably is the second world war.  Olly made at least one of the three videos (he mentioned on Twitter he was editing one), I don’t know whether it’s this one is. To accompany the video release, Muzu are giving away signed album copies if you join them and befriend Turin Brakes (and answer the video related question – so pay attention).

You can watch it all here.

So, do you like it?

Olly on 6music’s roundtable

Together with Huey from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Holly Walsh (comedian), Olly joined Steve Lamacq on the BBC 6Music roundtable. On the show, the guests listen to new music and then talk about it. Olly was also asked about the new album. It’s a nice listen, especially if you decide to play the “spot the chatroom comment by the webmaster of this site’  ;-) . Seriously though, the program is available for a week here (thanks for the link, Shazia).

Ether Site Recommends: Tom McRae – The Alphabet of Hurricanes

Every red moon, month, sea change or when the bright golden lights make you feel magic, Ether Site will recommend a band or singer/songwriter that you might like… Today we recommend Tom McRae.

Tom McRae has been going strong since his selftitled debut in 2000 was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. He didn’t win but has been making nice to very nice records ever since. Late 2009 he was ready to release an ambitious project consisting of two CDs. But then he got a new record deal at a record company who were willing to release it for him (which is the same company that is releasing the new Turin Brakes album). And thus, now we have this album and it’s his most diverse one to date. His songs are dark, sometimes even depressing and benefit from the open and honest production of these songs. Tom’s voice is that of a fallen angel. Single Please is a glorious bittersweet love songs with an anthemlike feel. Other highlights on the new record include Won’t Lie and Out Of The Walls.

The Alphabet of Hurricanes is released on the 22nd of February, on Cooking Vinyl. The download single Please is available now! Listen on Myspace to some of his songs. There you’ll also find a tour schedule for the longest tour he’s ever done, lasting over a month.
