Turin Brakes joined Dermot O’Leary last weekend to talk Optimist tour and the years that passed since the release of that record. It was quite a pleasant show. The guys (Olly, Gale, Rob and Ed) played a rendition of Underdog (Save Me) that closely resembled the album version. More stripped down, more intimate. They will play it like this during the tour as well. The guys also covered Wicked Game in a similar fashion. You can listen to the songs here and download the whole thing.

Turin Brakes return to Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 show

Turin Brakes will be guests on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 show. The band have been guests on the show many times before, even appearing on both of Saturday Session compilation CDs (Dermot O’Leary Presents The Saturday Sessions and The Saturday Sessions – The Dermot O’Leary show) Dermot has released. Different this time is that Dermot O’Leary is away and the episode of the show will be hosted by none other than Al Murray.

Will the band preview some new material? Or will they promote their upcoming Optimist Tour by playing some oldies from that album? Will the full band pop in or will it be just Olly and Gale? We’ll find out on Saturday. The show starts at 3 pm and can be streamed online via the BBC Radio 2 website worldwide. As usual, I’ll do my best to provide an mp3 link afterwards.

The 2CD compilation of Dermot O’Leary’s show on BBC Radio 2, The Saturday Sessions, has entered at no .2 in the compilation top 30 in the UK. As mentioned before, the compilation features an acoustic version of The Sea Change.

Dermot O’Leary is releasing the second compilation disc of Saturday Sessions recorded during his show on BBC Radio 2. It features bands playing acoustic songs and bands covering songs by other people. Turin Brakes have featured on the show many times throughout their career. On the first compilation they featured with a live version of their cover of Breaking The Girl (by the Red Hot Chili Peppers – the studio version can be found on The Red Moon EP). This time they feature with an acoustic version of one of their own songs: Sea Change, from the Outbursts album.

I’m assuming this version is the one recorded in January 2010, but the band also played the song at the Dermot Latitude Festival special in 2009. The compilation is released on 4 October 2010. Full press release and tracklisting after the break (I like saying “after the break”).

X Factor and BBC Radio 2 presenter Dermot O’Leary is launching “The Saturday Sessions” album in conjunction with his BBC Radio 2 show – Saturday’s from 3pm – 6pm.
The Saturday Sessions album, which will be released on October 4th 2010, is a collection of cover versions and rare stripped back acoustic versions from The Dermot O’Leary Show, which takes place every Saturday afternoon on BBC Radio 2. Featuring a variety of artists from Lily Allen, Massive Attack and Ellie Goulding to Katy Perry, Paolo Nutini and Florence & The Machine. All the tracks are exclusive to this album, and not available anywhere else.

The Saturday Sessions exclusively features a variety of recording artists who have swept the UK’s music scene over the past decade and beyond with a mix of new and modern takes on classic tracks. The album is a must have for fans of the bands, fans of the music and fans of Dermot.

Dermot’s show is the new music programme for BBC Radio 2 – the UK’s most listened to radio station. The show which won The Sony Awards Best Music Programme earlier this year, has been responsible for helping break new bands and give first plays to upcoming artists such as Paloma Faith, Lissie, The Ting Tings, Fleet Foxes, The Feeling, Scouting For Girls and The Hoosiers.

Dermot O’Leary said “The Saturday Sessions is my favourite part of the show. Dermot’s always had music in his blood; he kick-started his career as a DJ working for a local radio station, which later led him on to a series of presenting slots with both XFM and Radio 2. Dermot’s passion for music has always reflected in his achievements and Dermot’s radio 2 show won Music Programme of the Year in 2008 and then again in 2010.

New podcast and Janice Long interview

Some new things to listen to on the interwebs now. Turin Brakes have uploaded the fourth installment of their podcast. Olly has bought a new microphone thingie and then started recording everything he encountered, including a TB rehearsal in the woods, the toilets and some TB fans, at Moseley Folk Festival. Listen to it here.

Also at Moseley Folk Festival was Janice Long, who has a daily night time show on BBC Radio 2. She interviewed the band for her show. The interview aired last night, alongside a live performance of Underdog (Save Me) from the festival. Turin Brakes joined the Dermot O’Leary show on BBC Radio 2 just now, for a 20 minute interview + session. Olly, Gale and Eddie played new song The Sea Change and announced it would be released as the first single from Outbursts on 22 February. There was some confusion considering when the album was released with Olly and Gale mentioning the different dates of 1 and 8 March, but early March is definitely happening. Besides touring the UK, a tour of ‘Europe’ is ‘hopefully’ happening and there are even talks about a new US tour. After talking about the recording of the album, Twitter, babies and touring the highlands, the whole thing ended with a nice rendition of Feeling Oblivion. The whole thing will be available here soon.

This Saturday, you will be able to listen a live session with Olly, Gale and Eddie (Bass) on BBC Radio 2′s Dermot O’Leary show, featuring Dermot O’Leary. Dermot is a big fan of the band, he has mentioned in previous shows, even when the band wasn’t in the studio, so we can look forward to a nice show. Presumably, the band will spill the beans on what’s to come on/with Outbursts, so it should be interesting. They previously played The Sea Change and Never Stops for Dermot’s show earlier this Summer.
