It features bands playing acoustic songs and bands covering songs by other people. Turin Brakes have featured on the show many times throughout their career. On the first compilation they featured with a live version of their cover of Breaking The Girl (by the Red Hot Chili Peppers – the studio version can be found on The Red Moon EP). This time they feature with an acoustic version of one of their own songs: Sea Change, from the Outbursts album.

I’m assuming this version is the one recorded in January 2010, but the band also played the song at the Dermot Latitude Festival special in 2009. The compilation is released on 4 October 2010. Full press release and tracklisting after the break (I like saying “after the break”).

If you like pre-ordering this particular cd, you can do so here.

X Factor and BBC Radio 2 presenter Dermot O’Leary is launching “The Saturday Sessions” album in conjunction with his BBC Radio 2 show – Saturday’s from 3pm – 6pm.
The Saturday Sessions album, which will be released on October 4th 2010, is a collection of cover versions and rare stripped back acoustic versions from The Dermot O’Leary Show, which takes place every Saturday afternoon on BBC Radio 2. Featuring a variety of artists from Lily Allen, Massive Attack and Ellie Goulding to Katy Perry, Paolo Nutini and Florence & The Machine. All the tracks are exclusive to this album, and not available anywhere else.

The Saturday Sessions exclusively features a variety of recording artists who have swept the UK’s music scene over the past decade and beyond with a mix of new and modern takes on classic tracks. The album is a must have for fans of the bands, fans of the music and fans of Dermot.

Dermot’s show is the new music programme for BBC Radio 2 – the UK’s most listened to radio station. The show which won The Sony Awards Best Music Programme earlier this year, has been responsible for helping break new bands and give first plays to upcoming artists such as Paloma Faith, Lissie, The Ting Tings, Fleet Foxes, The Feeling, Scouting For Girls and The Hoosiers.

Dermot O’Leary said “The Saturday Sessions is my favourite part of the show. It’s a privilege to hear such a diverse and brilliant range of artists singing songs you wouldn’t necessarily associate with them, which makes these performances so unusual and special. This album has really fuelled my passion for live music.”

Dermot’s always had music in his blood; he kick-started his career as a DJ working for a local radio station, which later led him on to a series of presenting slots with both XFM and Radio 2. Dermot’s passion for music has always reflected in his achievements and Dermot’s radio 2 show won Music Programme of the Year in 2008 and then again in 2010.

The Saturday Sessions album launches on October 4th 2010 and is available to buy and download from iTunes, Amazon and all good retailers.

A Quiet Night

One can say a lot about 2003, but it wasn’t a quiet period… To end 2003, Olly & Gale did a tour down-under, in Australia and New-Zealand, touring then different venues. By this time the band was frustrated, tired, confused. The question Why are we doing this? kept popping up in the heads of the band members and it was clear they needed a holiday. And that’s what they got: a holiday. Time to work things out.

In February 2004 the band was asked to compile a compilation for Azuli’s Late Night Tales-series. They selected songs that inspired them and did a cover of one of them :Moonlight Mile, originally by The Rolling Stones.

In March 2004 a message was posted on the official site that the band had started building their own studio in South-London. This was later christened as the TB Inc. The band posted photos of the building progress on the website and as soon as the former stable was a suitable studio moved in there to work on new songs in their own time. Some of the songs premiered during a one off show at the Somerset House. It was sold out within a few days.

The gig itself was magic, according to the people who were there. Most songs from the 2nd album were replaced with songs from The Optimist LP and more importantly: new songs! Early versions of Can’t Buy The Sunshine, JackinABox, Come & Go, Forever, Over And Over and Fishing For A Dream were played and suggested a far more optimistic album than Ether Song ever was. The messages on the official website seemed to confirm this all. The Somerset House gig was supposed to be released later on, but this plan never became reality.

There was a bit of stir before the gig in the summer though. The week before the Somerset House gig, Olly and Gale played a secret gig in the Water Rats in London under the name Slightly Fat for the ‘fanclub’ (a wrong report on BBC Ceefax). No fan knew about it, and this made some fans angry (what fanclub?). An apology was posted on the website, and Olly & Gale went to XFM to apologize once again and explained that this was a gig for close friends and family only (there was one journalist there, and he wrote a report for BBC Ceefax). They didn’t play any songs at XFM radio, but they did tell that they almost finished the album.

The final months of 2004 were used to mix the 3rd album together with Mike Spike Stent, and to make a first attempt at mastering the stuff A second master was made just after 2005 begun. Olly announced around the same time that his woman Rachel was pregnant, and due for April (around the same time as the third album would come out). And so a relatively quiet year ended with a lot of good news and high hopes for the future… A new album, a new life… But not before Turin Brakes made a guest appearance on Band Aid 20. They are featured in the video for less than second, but they ARE part of it…

EMI has released ‘The Festival Album’, featuring a selection of summery songs that will go down well on festival stages this summer (and any summer really). The compilation is a bit weird, since it features really really really really old songs as well as newer ones (Supergrass for example). But the most important thing is that Painkiller (Summer Rain) is featured.

In similar compilation news:
Playlist: Alternative is a list of tracks in the alternative genre. It features Underdog (Save Me) and besides that a similar line up of artists at the album mentioned above. This one was released 30 April.
