Turin Brakes joined Dermot O’Leary last weekend to talk Optimist tour and the years that passed since the release of that record. It was quite a pleasant show. The guys (Olly, Gale, Rob and Ed) played a rendition of Underdog (Save Me) that closely resembled the album version. More stripped down, more intimate. They will play it like this during the tour as well. The guys also covered Wicked Game in a similar fashion. You can listen to the songs here and download the whole thing.

So yesterday Turin Brakes played the Canterbury Festival. It was a very nice evening in a very nice big hall with great acoustics. The band played a set full of classics with some unexpected twists and turns… Expect a proper review soon, for now here’s a recording of Emergency 72, made last night with my recording thing. I hope you dig it. Olly is on a bit of a roll here, with the extremely extended intro. And then they have to change into the proper song as well…

So, here’s a lot of news… Turin Brakes are about to head off to the USA and Canada for some nice touring. For the list of dates, check here. If you know about any upcoming press appearances (radio stuff, interviews – get in touch). Also, live reviews, setlists and everything else is very much appreciated. New date in Ireland

In addition to the dates in Dublin and Belfast, there’s now also a date in Cork, on 19 June. Tickets are on sale here and various other outlets.

Radio 5Live Appearance

Olly and Gale joined Radio 5Live on 4 May to discuss the new music releases of the week and also their single Rocket Song. There’s a lot of music banter. The music review bit is spread out over the last 20-25 minutes of the program. You can listen again here. Olly says about Rocket Song: “It’s about old love and that it’s ok.” Olly also says that he likes writing for anyone but that the prefers writing for Turin Brakes. Also, working for Take That and Dido is being discussed (“Clear up, get lettuce, Dido is coming!”).

Paper Heart live + Ether Song live from Roma

Gale has updated the player on the official site with a live version of Ether Song from Roma. It’s very nice. So go ahead, listen to it on the player on turinbrakes.com.

Charts and things

The voting thing is still possible. So far we’ve managed to get TB in the top 20 in Belgium… So let’s keep it going here. Meanwhile in The Netherlands, Turin Brakes have entered the top 10 of the Kink 40 at no. 10. That’s good!

Audio, video and Philadelphia (gig)

So… All in a day’s work… Lots of videos have popped up on the world wide web. Most of them are made by Jeanne at the London and Brighton gigs last weekend and can be found here.

In more official media updates: on turinbrakes.com you can find the second installment of the Podcast (in which tour members are introduced) as well as a live version of Mirror from the Manchester gig. So check it out.

And US fans may rejoice: a gig in Philadelphia has been added on Monday 24 May 2010. Tickets cost 15 dollars and the gig is taking place at Kungfu Necktie.

New live album for sale

It’s busy in the world of Turin Brakes. The band have released a live album from a full band show in The Troubador in Los Angeles. Tracks cost 0.60 GBP, which means you’ll be paying 10.20 GBP for the whole thing. To purchase, you need a Paypal account. After paying, you get an email with a personalised download link.

The album is a combination of tracks from JackInABox and the first two albums and is on sale NOW.

A few months ago we rediscovered some recordings made at the LA Troubadour in 2005 during the JackInABox USA tour, a hot rockin’ full band gig in a legendary rock venue, recorded off the desk as separate tracks and recently mixed into a 17 track live album, for sale in the new MP3 store under the “music” tab right here on the home page, check em’ out if your feelin’ nostalgic…

Outbursts: exclusive iTunes bonus track

After last week’s exclusive b-side for Sea Change, it hardly comes as a surprise that the iTunes version of Outbursts comes with an exclusive bonus track as well, this one is called Endless Freeze Frame and can be purchased separately (if you have already ordered the album in a different way), you can also listen to a short preview.

The album is available in stores tomorrow.

Ooh look, it’s a free download of Apocolips, a new Gale-penned track from Outbursts. It’s free free free – please give us your email – it’s free free free!

Gale, who wrote two of the twelve songs – Apocolips and Embryos – is even more reluctant to analyse the songs in terms of personal experience. “You pick up on a tiny emotion within yourself and turn it into a film,” Gale says. “That’s what being a good songwriter is all about, and Olly is one of the very best. But there is a difference between what people create and who they are. It’s not necessarily the same thing. You should enjoy the film, not try and work out where the camera was the whole time.”

Remember, remember the first week of September? That first week, Olly and Gale did a lot of promotion for the Bottled At Source compilation. Though some interviews are actually similar, some of them feature very interesting insights in the early days. This is one of those very nice interviews, going into 9/11, the making of The Optimist LP, the current compilation and working with Take That. Since there are no session tracks (just album tracks from the compilation), it’s all in one big MP3 file. In total, the interview lasts 19 minutes.

So in the first of what is to become many “Session Sundays”, here’s the first of many Bottled At Source promoting radio sessions. The interviews will be quite similar (lots of talking about their childhood and past), spiced with hints of the future. The songs are quite similar as well, there’s quite a lot of Painkiller and Underdog in all the sessions I will post. You will also find several versions of Never Stops appearing online over the coming weeks. However, this first one is also one of the better ones in my opinion: the interview is laidback and relaxed and the songs are well performed. You can choose to download the whole thing (11 MP3 files with interview and acoustic songs) or just the music. Make your pick and enjoy.
