“We took that money that we made off that song and reinvested it in our studio and this album,” revealed Olly. “So technically, you know, without Take That…I don’t know if we’d have a Turin Brakes album.”

“I’m not going to say we made a huge amount but we made enough money to cover a few debts that we’d built up over a couple of years of not being signed. We had to find some money from somewhere. Neither me or Gale have made enough money to sit back and relax by any stretch, so we have to find money. It is about that.”

“It felt a little weird to look back but the story of Turin Brakes is definitely NOT over. We are not shutting up shop.” In fact, Olly and Gale are working on their fifth studio album, Outbursts, which is scheduled for release next year.

On working with Take That:

“Our drummer’s girlfriend works as a personal chef for Take That,” revealed Olly. ”One day, Howard popped into the kitchen for something to eat and she just happened to be wearing a Turin Brakes T-shirt. He said: ‘I love Turin Brakes – how do you know about them?’ “He asked if she reckoned we’d ever be prepared to write a song withthem.”

Olly and Gale joined Howard and Gary Barlow in Sarm West Studios in London to write Here. Olly said: “Gale and I have proved ourselves as writers, so we thought: ‘Why not have a go at pop?’ It was a bit of a challenge and real fun.’ They loved what we came up with and put it on Circus. When we heard the finished version of Here, it sounded like Turin Brakes on steroids. They performed the track 10,000 times bigger than we could. I’m very proud of the song.”

A graduate of the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, her first album was Clocktower Park, released in 2003 by Kitchenware Records. The album was named for a meeting place in her home town. In 2007, she released her second album, Tim’s House. It quickly became the No. 1 album on the UK iTunes Store knocking Take That off the Number 1 spot. The album also features her most popular song, Your Song. Her big break came when she gained iTunes customers’ attention when her song Talk of the Town became the iTunes Free Single of the Week from the week beginning 20th March 2007.  With her No.1 here and Top 10 iTunes across Europe then a No.1 on the US iTunes Folk Chart, Kate quickly became the talk of the global music industry, leapfrogging over established artists such as Kaiser Chiefs, Arcade Fire and Amy Winehouse through the massive word-of-mouth digital buzz.

A classically trained pianist and accomplished guitarist, her ‘Your Song’ recently featured in the soundtrack to the hit movie ‘Angus Thongs and perfect Snogging’.  Now signed to Mercury records – Kate is probably the most high profile ‘support’ artist we are ever likely to have. I’m sure after this we’ll see her back here headlining her own show.

Andy Steele is recording an album with Jez Wing called Night Fishing LP. It is (partly) recorded at Turin Brakes HQ and according to Andy Steele’s website, Rob Allum, the drummer, is also part of it. Release date to be announced. Andy released an album called True Believers and the Guises of the Weasel in 2007.

Pete Lawrie has a Myspace and hasn’t released anything as yet (as far as I know).

Kate Walsh, known for her second album,Tims House, is hoping to release her second album (tba) this Spring.

Lisa Mitchell’s The Attic Space, as previously reported, is scheduled for an early March release. Her debut single, Neopolitan Dreams, was used in a washing powder commercial.

Take That’s The Circus, featuring the song Here by Olly & Gale, is already widely available (note that some international versions lack Here).

TURIN BRAKES in CHRISTMAS #1 TAKE THAT ALBUM!

We’re celebrating at Reverb HQ this month because the writing session between Olly and Gale of Turin Brakes and the lovely chaps in Take That resulted in the song Here being included on Take That’s Circus album. Not only is this album the Christmas #1 album in 2008, it’s the second fastest selling album in chart history (the first being Oasis’s Be Here Now) and has now sold over 1 million copies. Having heard the rest of Circus, we can confirm it’s a fantastic album and Take That have deservedly retained their pop crown. Meanwhile, Olly and Gale have been working away in their South London studio working on material for their new album – which is sounding amazing!
