They Can’t Buy The Sunshine

First track of the third album, JackInABox.
The song is partly about the autumn of 2003, when the label made them re-release Ether Song and record a new single for it, because Ether Songhad worn out (read: not sold enough copies, not enough airplay) “fame and fortune never lasts”. Olly and Gale felt very uncomfortable about this (” We may have sold our very souls”), but they kept the spirit alive, because “We know the one thing they don’t know: they can’t buy the sunshine”.

All in all it’s been a blast
But fame and fortune never lasts
We’ll take refuge in the sound
They burned our churches to the ground

But they can’t buy the sunshine
They can’t buy the sunshine
They can’t buy the sun
No they can’t stop the sun
Shine on the sun, the sun, the sun.

We may have sold our very souls
To the ghosts inside the radio
They warned us once and they told us twice
This life’s never very nice

But they can’t buy the sunshine
They can’t buy the sunshine
They can’t buy the sun
No, they can’t stop the sun
Shine on the sun, the sun, the sun

The credit card skyline rises high
Crushing the sky it multiplies
They’re buying up souls to fill their holes
But we know the one thing they don’t know

They can’t buy the sunshine
They can’t buy the sunshine
They can’t buy the sun
But they can’t stop the sunshine
They can’t stop the sunshine
They can’t stop the sun
Shine on the sun, the sun, the sun
Shine on the sun, the sun, the sun (x4)
