This song was originally just called Stone, as is proved by the home recording on the Mind Over Money single. This version is on Ether Song, the 2nd album. Gale: ‘Stone thrown’. We released that as a B side on ‘Mind over Money’ ages ago as a home recording but we recorded it again in LA. It explains itself really.
Olly: Its about being dumped basically, as about 50 per cent of our songs seem to be. It’s a song that’s very friendly, we’ve had it for a few years and it’s proved itself to us which is why we said lets record it. Even though we didnt have to do it in LA we did because its fun and it shines through. Its just a sweet lost love classic. And we recorded it very much in the style of Neil Young, so its great as on the album it suddenly goes very retro.
Q: Is it an improvement on the B-side recording?
Olly: Its not an improvement, because the home recording has a magic thats irreplaceable, but it wouldn’t have made sense on the album. This one is just as strong but it’s more groove based, it’s a lot tighter. You can nod your head to it, and its a lot more professional.
I’m the stone you’ve just thrown into the ocean
How many stones have you thrown?
Turin brown, I’m going down for the very first time.
Now where’s the truth in this?
I dared to dream, but you were more violent than the worst hurricane
Oh take me sailing again
Oh take me sailing again
You’re taking aim, your fiery flame infects the freedom fighter,
Your love was just a fucking game.
So love me like my brother should, keep me safe from harm,
Like nobody could, Yeah.
I see the sorrow, it don’t look so good
Oh take me sailing again
Oh take me sailing again
But here in the ocean currents dag me deeper down,
But i’m the stone that can’t be drowned
Oh take me sailing again
Oh take me sailing again
I’m the stone you’ve just thrown into the ocean
How many stones have you thrown?
